KLIA to KL City in 2026: Train vs Taxi vs Grab vs Private Transfer

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is about 60 km south of the city centre. Whether you land at Terminal 1 (KLIA) or Terminal 2 (formerly KLIA2), you have four main ways to get into town:

  • KLIA Ekspres train
  • Airport taxi
  • Grab (e-hailing)
  • Private transfer

None of them is the best for everyone. A solo backpacker and a family of five with luggage need very different things. Here's how they compare.

Prices below were checked in October 2026 and change often, especially Grab. Use them as a guide.

Option 1: KLIA Ekspres Train

The KLIA Ekspres is a non-stop train between the airport and KL Sentral. It takes about 28 minutes from Terminal 1 and a little longer from Terminal 2, with trains every 15–20 minutes from around 5 AM to 1 AM.

The adult fare is RM 55 one-way. It will rise to RM 65 from 1 January 2027. Booking on the official website or app gets you 10% off.

Pros

  • Fast and predictable, with no traffic
  • Cheapest fast option for one person

Cons

  • Stops at KL Sentral, so you still need a taxi, Grab or train to your hotel
  • For a family of four, the fares add up to more than a taxi
  • Carrying bags through stations

Option 2: Airport Taxi

Official airport taxis use prepaid coupons bought at the counter in the arrival hall. To KLCC, expect around RM 75 for a budget taxi and RM 100–120 for a premier taxi.

Watch out for the midnight surcharge of about 50% between midnight and 6 AM.

Pros

  • No app or booking needed
  • Goes straight to your hotel

Cons

  • Queues at the counter at busy times
  • Budget taxis have limited space for big suitcases
  • Late-night surcharge

Tip: only use the official counters inside the terminal. Ignore drivers who approach you in the arrival hall.

Option 3: Grab

Grab is popular with travellers who already have the app. Fares to KLCC vary a lot with demand, from about RM 55 to RM 135. Off-peak trips are often RM 80–100, and peak-hour or late-night fares are higher because of surge pricing.

Pros

  • Often cheaper than a taxi off-peak
  • Price shown before you book

Cons

  • Surge pricing when many flights land at once
  • You need mobile data and the app as soon as you land
  • Finding your car at the pickup point can take time
  • Most Grab cars are small; bigger cars cost more

Option 4: Private Transfer

With a private transfer, your driver tracks your flight and waits at the arrival hall with a sign showing your name, then drives you straight to your hotel.

A WadahGo KLIA to KL City transfer starts at RM 250 for a Compact MPV (up to 4 passengers) and RM 350 for a Premium MPV (up to 7), with tolls included.

To be honest, that's more than Grab or a taxi for one or two people. Where a private transfer makes sense:

  • Families and groups: one MPV instead of two taxis, with room for prams and big suitcases.
  • Late-night arrivals: no surge pricing, and no searching for a ride at 2 AM.
  • First-time visitors: someone is waiting for you, by name, the moment you walk out.
  • Going further than KL: the same driver can take you straight to Genting, Melaka or beyond.

Pros

  • Meet & greet at arrivals, flight tracked
  • Fixed price per vehicle, agreed before you fly
  • Big vehicles for groups and luggage

Cons

  • Most expensive option for a solo traveller
  • Needs booking in advance

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • Solo, light bags, staying near KL Sentral: take the KLIA Ekspres.
  • Couple with the Grab app, daytime arrival: Grab is usually the best value.
  • No app and want to go straight to the hotel: use an official airport taxi.
  • Family, group, lots of luggage or a late-night landing: book a private transfer.

Not Staying in KL?

Many travellers go straight from the airport to somewhere else. Private transfers are often the easiest way to do this, because there's no change at KL Sentral:
